Kerry, that's an excellent question. I imagine there was a lot of scrubbing on washboards, something my back could never handle today! Or maybe those dresses were their "Sunday Best," reserved only for special occasions and photographs?

There are so many dynamics in this picture from the girls to the ladies on the porch, the house. I love it.!
They look like a fun group!
(Although I wonder how they managed to keep those long white skirts clean in the days before washing machines and Oxy-Clean...)
