DAR Flag Disposal Ceremony to be Held on Flag Day

The Captain Henry Sweetser Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be meeting on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., in Santa Maria, for their annual Flag Day - Flag Disposal Ceremony and Pot Luck Luncheon. Members of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will also be attending.

Flags, like any other items made of fabric, are subject to wear and tear, but cannot simply be thrown out when they become tattered and unusable. The U.S. Federal Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 176(k) reads,

"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
Many patriotic organizations hold Flag Disposal ceremonies on Flag Day, and this ceremony has long been a tradition of the Captain Henry Sweetser Chapter Daughters.

Thank you, Miss Elizabeth, for your kind "plug" regarding the Flag Retirement Ceremony...I have a funny story about one of my alter egos: "Flag Policewoman". I had already tried my hand at Flag Law Enforcement last Sunday in Orcutt, and it worked out well, fortunately for me...I was not wounded (or worse) in the line of duty...but yesterday I kicked it up a notch.
I happened to be in the "Michael's" parking lot on S. Broadway, on the cell phone, and I look up to see the Iversen Motors flag flying away, all faded and tattered. It put me right off my phone conversation, and I had to hang up...I quickly found my DAR business card (AKA the Badge) and stomped over to the car dealership (where I had been a car-buying customer in the past, fortunately!).
It was 5:05 PM, so I didn't expect any GM's to be there, but I was directed to the Finance Mgr, who happened to be the guy who sold me my car back in 2001! Oh, happy day! Well, Fortune smiled on us all yesterday, because they already had their new flag ready to go, they just hadn't put it up yet. So...guess who insisted on "helping" them take down the old flag and raise the bright, new, beautiful Colors? Uh-huh...the Flag Police...I even have pictures. I just found out I have a clear calendar today, so I think I will try to put together a nice little press release and ship it off to the SM Times...I'm sure that Iversen would love the free publicity! (Well, maybe not)
LOVE your blog, BTW...you are a woman of so many talents...God bless you and your family! (From Susan Clack, Regent, Capt. Henry Sweetser Chapter, DAR)
